Life Hacks for Chronic Tongue Burners

By Ellie Drabnis on November 20, 2017

Chronic Tongue Burners: people who are prone to burning their tongue more often than not. But there seems to be a lack of actually helpful pieces of information out there for those of us dealing with the burnt tongues after we stupidly down coffee that is very hot or slurp some not quite cooled soup.

But, here are some life hacks for chronic tongue burners.

1. Order your coffee at Kid’s Temperature

This is something you can ask for at Starbucks. When you order a hot coffee or other hot drink at kid’s temperature, it means that the drink will not be nearly as hot as it would be otherwise. Plenty of people do not like waiting to dive into their coffee, so this is perfect when you’re someone who cannot wait to dive into their morning cup of joe. At other coffee places, simply try asking if they can serve your beverage not as hot.

2. Put an ice cube in your soup or hot beverage

I love to drink tea regularly and microwaving water for tea just isn’t the same as boiling water on the stove and using that water for my tea. I have certain teas that I like with lemon juice and, after my tea bag has steeped, I add a small lemon juice ice cube. This does not water down my tea, given the ‘ice cube’ is lemon juice.

When it comes to eating hot soup if you’re really dying to dive into that soup, grab an ice cube. It will bring the temperature of your soup down and you don’t have to wait too long to eat it. Plus, you won’t burn your mouth at that point.

3. Avoid irritating the burn after the fact

This strategy is an afterthought to many but it shouldn’t be. You’ve burned your mouth for the millionth time, won’t make a difference, right? You probably won’t lose the ability to taste things but you could definitely irritate the burn some more.

Meaning, avoid burning your tongue again. Instead of grabbing a hot coffee the next day, opt for an iced coffee option (Frappuccinos, etc.).

While you’re at it, don’t eat anything that might be harsh on your tongue such as spicy foods or pineapple.

4. Turn to the Internet

Now, this is a strategy that can make anyone skeptical of anything. More because sometimes a lot of the information out there can be skewed. But, Colgate‘s website does have their own list of suggestions. Even if you don’t use their products, their strategies to deal with a burnt mouth are certainly better than ones found on a blog somewhere.

Hopefully, these tips will help my fellow Chronic Tongue Burners all while raising some awareness for those who might not burn their tongues 24/7 but who may eventually.
